Highlight tape rules: what college coaches actually watch.

College coaches watch a lot of film and they watch it fast. A tape built for how they watch gets seen. Here are the rules.

Your best five plays go first

A college coach decides in the first few plays whether to keep watching. Do not build to a big finish. Open with the play you would want a coach to see if they only saw one, then the next best, and keep going in that order. Chronological order is for season recaps, not recruiting film.

Keep it short

Three to five minutes covers it. If a coach wants more, they will ask for a full game, and that request is a good sign. A tape that runs long tells a coach the athlete could not decide what mattered, and the coach will not decide for them.

Make yourself easy to find

Mark yourself before the snap or the serve on every clip. An arrow or a circle at the start of the play, held long enough to register, is the difference between a coach evaluating you and a coach guessing which athlete you are. If the film has a scoreboard or a clock, leave it in. Context sells the play.

Skip the extras

  • No music. Coaches watch with the sound off or with their own opinion on.
  • No montage intro, no title sequence beyond a simple name card: name, school, class year, position, number.
  • No effects, no slow motion on routine plays, no replays of the same play from three angles.

Show the whole athlete

Coaches want effort away from the ball as much as the ball itself. A receiver blocking downfield, a guard sprinting back on defense, a shortstop backing up a throw. One or two of those plays in the first ten tells a coach something stats cannot.

Keep it current and easy to reach

Update the tape during the season, not just after it. A junior season tape that ends in October is a question mark by January. And put the film where a coach can press play without logging in or downloading anything. On NextLevl school sites, an athlete's public Hudl highlights play right on their athlete profile, so the link a coach gets is the link that plays.

The rule behind all the rules: respect the coach's time. Every choice that saves them a minute makes your film easier to say yes to.

Twenty minutes after that is usually enough.
