The recruiting calendar, sport by sport.

Every NCAA sport runs on its own calendar of when coaches can call, visit, host and sign recruits. You do not need to memorize it. You need to know how it works and where to check it.

The vocabulary

  • Contact period. Coaches can talk to recruits and families in person, on and off campus.
  • Evaluation period. Coaches can watch athletes compete and visit schools, but in-person conversations are restricted.
  • Quiet period. In-person contact only on the college campus.
  • Dead period. No in-person contact anywhere. Calls and messages may still be allowed.
  • Official and unofficial visits. Official visits are paid for in part by the college and limited in number; unofficial visits are on the family.
  • Signing windows. The dates when a National Letter of Intent or written offer can actually be signed.

Why sports differ so much

Football and basketball carry the most restrictive, most publicized calendars. Olympic sports run looser schedules with longer evaluation stretches. Division III and NAIA operate under far lighter rules than Division I. So advice that is true for a quarterback can be wrong for a swimmer, and both can be wrong a year later, because the calendars are revised regularly.

The way to use the calendar

  1. Know your sport's season: when coaches evaluate, when they call, when they sign.
  2. Time your outreach to land just before coaches are allowed to respond, so you are near the top of the inbox when the window opens.
  3. Plan visits and camps around the periods when coaches can actually be present.
  4. Verify dates at ncaa.org before acting on any of it, including this page.

Let the roster drive the reminders

The practical failure is not ignorance, it is timing: nobody connects the calendar to the specific juniors and seniors on a roster this year. On NextLevl school sites, the weekly coaches email includes the recruiting dates that matter for the athletes actually on the roster, computed class by class, so the window never opens unnoticed.

See your school on it
before the first call.

We will put up a version of your site, with your colors, crest and roster, before we talk.
Twenty minutes after that is usually enough.
